I have done many charity events, and I still occasionally do when I find the time, but there is one which particularly sticks in my mind it was in aid of Marie Curie.
I arrived awkwardly early… something that tends to be quite common when I’m attending events. Throughout the evening there were various acts taking part, all being introduced by a master of ceremonies — a dancing dog, a DJ, and a Motown Jazz Band.
I was performing close-up table magic throughout the evening. Everyone was really responsive, but every time I introduced myself as Michael the Magician, I noticed a sign of disappointment from the guests. Either they weren’t fans of close-up magic, or I was presenting myself incorrectly. Luckily, neither of these were the case.
The pamphlets, leaflets, and posters advertising the event had a very specific description for me…
“Magic Mike at your table.”
So, when I showed up with a deck of cards, you can understand why people were disappointed disappointed that a stripper wasn’t present, but relieved I was keeping my clothes on!
